5 Reasons why Star Gazing in Zion National Park is one of the most amazing things

There’s something deeply humbling about standing in front of the Milky Way, seeing the vastness of the universe against the black blank canvas of the sky.. and realizing how small & insignficant you are.

All your worries suddenly become clear for what they are: tiny, fleeting writings on the sands of the skies, erased with each wave of starry canopies engulfing your vision.

I’ve been lucky enough to see the Milky way in Banff National Park, by Lake Tekapo in New Zealand and more recently in the prolific Zion National Park in Utah.

The beauty of this wonder is, no matter where in the world you witness the galaxies and the starry skies, the affect is always the same: awe, grandeur & being completely stupefied into an inspirational solitude. Here’s my attempt #3 at astrophotography, it took me a good 1.5 hours and over 50 pictures to capture a final set of 5 pictures that I’m happy with. I hope you find as much Mojo & peace as I did at Zion National Park over these sights!

Awe-Inspiring Night Skies at Zion National Park

Turning the corner into the valley & setting up for astrophotography!

Oh wow, Zion night sky! You are a vision. Even with all the cars coming through….

I decided to photograph the back of the valley, where there weren’t any roads… hello clouds!

Ahhhh Milky Way…. there you are!  I shot this as 2 separate images, but standing in front of the same scenery.

So there you go, there is ample Mojo to be found viewing the night skies at Zion National Park, do go check it out!

These pictures are beautiful! I’m going to Zion next week and I really want to see something like this. We’re camping at Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort. What areas of the park do you recommend going to to see this sort of view? At what times would you recommend going?

Thank you Stephanie! Oh how exciting you get to go to Zion next week, it will not disappoint :). I’ve heard good things about Zion Ponderosa Ranch resort being a great vantage point for star gazing. The pictures above are from the Watchmen by the bridge vista point, just past the visitor center, a 10 minute drive from the park entrance. Additionally, the Kolob Canyons area, on the eastern side of the park, is an excellent spot for stargazing. Pa’rus Trail will also give you a wide view of the night sky. Here’s a link with additional tips on stargazing in Zion: https://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/sunset-stargazing.htm
As for the best times to go, ideally you want to go a few hours after sunset. I caught this view between midnight – 1 AM, in September. If you’re going next week, the same time frame might work for stargazing. Hope this helps and have an awesome trip!
